The First Performance National Day of Celebration LIVE at IMEC
Featuring the Brooks Middle School Beginning Band
The First Performance National Day of Celebration is a day that has been set aside to recognize the achievements of beginning instrumental music students and to celebrate their accomplishments through the presentation of a demonstration concert that allows these young musicians to showcase their newly acquired musical skills for the very first time in a public setting. The program reduces dropouts, encourages positive communication with parents and strengthens administrative support through a memorable concert experience for all stakeholders.

Dayton Public Schools (DPS) celebrated the astonishing growth of its instrumental music program this past year with “DPS Big Gig 2.0.” The event was a repeat performance of last year’s inaugural celebration, which served to bring artists and educators to a student body that, prior to 2018, had been without a band program for more than a decade. This year, more than 50 middle and high school students who play in the DPS All-City Intermediate/Advanced Band participated in clinics provided by Lamar Burkhalter, a Yamaha Performing Artist and music director for the Houston Texans, and Wayne Markworth, director of Winds for Winter Guard International Sport of the Arts (WGI). The clinicians helped the band prepare for its upcoming performance at the DPS All-City Arts Festival, to be held on May 4 at Riverscape Metropark.

Students continue to participate in our music programs because they cannot imagine school without the meaningful engagement that our courses provide. For one reason or another however, we continue to lose some students along the way.
One South Carolina school district came to the realization that they could do something about it. Below is their story and some initial steps they are taking to work toward the vision of leading 100% of their students to a life-long relationship with music-making.
