Advocacy
Advocacy is all about the “why” of music education and living that imperative. It’s not something that we do, it’s who we are. With the purpose of an education in music clarified, the mission also becomes clear. Through her work with the NAMM Foundation, the Music Achievement Council (MAC) and the Yamaha Master Educator Program, Marcia continues to spread her enthusiasm for enhancing the long-term quality of life for young people by engaging increased numbers of them in memorable experiences through their personal relationship with music-making at the highest level. MAC’s MSFQ mantra of “More to Start, Fewer to Quit” provides the impetus for her numerous articles, conference sessions, professional development trainings and inclusion programs to lead more students to the joy of music-making. |

2. National Mariachi Education Workshops:
Over the past 16 years, the National Mariachi Workshops for Educators has been instrumental in training well over 1,000 educators and subsequently, tens of thousands of students, who serve schools with growing Latino demographics. These educators have found great success in engaging students, parents, and local communities by implementing standards-based, traditional mariachi programs. These programs are growing at an exponential rate and school districts, community centers and after-school programs are all discovering that by providing mariachi experiences, young people are becoming more engaged in their general education.
Beginning in 2023, the National Mariachi Workshops for Educators (NMWE) began being administered by National Mariachi Education Consultants; a new organization led by Yvette Sital, Senior Instructor from the NMWE. The sole national mariachi education training program in the United States, the goal of the new National Mariachi Education Workshops is to equip music educators with the materials and knowledge necessary to either start their own mariachi program or to enhance the program that they are already teaching. Held in Las Vegas, NV, at the Orleans Hotel and Casino the week week of June 24-28, 2024, this event continues to draw over one hundred (100) educators from all over the country and is co-sponsored by Conn-Selmer, Inc., Hal Leonard Corporation, and Yamaha Corporation.
Three (3) levels of instruction (Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced) will again be offered with each also containing a strand of vocal training so that all participants will have access to age-appropriate vocal pedagogy. The esteemed clinician, Maestro Jose Hernandez, will work with both levels individually to help educators better apply the appropriate performance characteristics to each of the styles.
The majority of the focus of each course is placed on the playing of secondary and tertiary instruments in the areas that are of most need as determined by each individual educator/participant. All participants will, however, have the opportunity to perform on their primary instruments to more readily learn the characteristic, stylistic nuances necessitated by the various mariachi styles being studied In addition to violin and trumpet, all attendees will also receive extensive training on the guitar, the vihuela and the guitarron.
Three (3) graduate credits may be made available. For more information, contact [email protected].

FIRST PERFORMANCE NATIONAL DAY OF CELEBRATION
The FIRST PERFORMANCE NATIONAL DAY OF CELEBRATION (FPNDoC) is a turnkey demonstration concert designed to recognize and celebrate beginning band and orchestra students for their achievements. It allows our youngest musicians to showcase their newly-acquired musical skills for the very first time in a public setting within the first six to seven weeks of school. It is a scripted event that provides parents with the opportunity to hear their child’s progress in a fun and entertaining program that requires little or no extra work for the teacher, while also providing school administrators with an opportunity to view first-hand the joy and pride that our students, as well as their parents, experience in these early weeks.
