what basic information do i need to know?
The 2022 National Mariachi Workshops for Educators® is being hosted by the Anaheim Elementary School District in Orange Grove Elementary School located at 1000 S. Harbor Boulevard, Anaheim, CA 92805. Workshop hours are 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM daily. Doors will open at 7:00 AM on Tuesday, May 31,2022, and the workshop will conclude “officially” at 4:00 PM on Friday, June 3, 2022. Two (2) levels of instruction, based on Beginning and Intermediate/Advanced Mariachi Styles, will be offered with each focusing on the playing of secondary and tertiary instruments in the areas that are of highest need as determined by each attendee. Vocal training will also be provided so that participants will have access to age-appropriate vocal pedagogy. These two levels are defined by the specific mariachi styles to be studied which progress from easy to difficult along the continuum. All participants will also have the opportunity to perform on their primary instruments to sharpen characteristic stylistic nuances as required by the various mariachi styles and it is recommended that students who want to learn to play trumpet bring their own instrument to the trainings.
who are the clinicians?
Our esteemed performing artist clinician, Maestro José Hernández, director of the world-famous, Mariachi Sol de México, sponsored by Conn-Selmer, Inc. , will return this year and work with both levels individually to teach the appropriate performance characteristics of each of the styles being studied. Willie Acuña, renowned harpist for Mariachi Sol de México, will also return to offer harp classes as the instrument is experiencing increased popularity in school-based mariachi programs. As the lead instructors for the workshops, the highly successful mariachi educators from the Clark County School District’s (CCSD) comprehensive, standards-based, award-winning Mariachi Program will again bring their talents and most effective materials and classroom strategies to share with all participants. The 2021-22 CCSD district-wide Mariachi Program has over 7,000 enrollees–the largest in the nation–and our instructors which include Robert Lopez, Erik Ramirez, Yvette Sital, and Miriam Vazquez will share their instructional strategies as well as their ideas for recruiting and retaining students to build your programs.
what level should i sign up for?
This is a pedagogy workshop. In other words, it is designed to teach teachers how to teach mariachi. As such, the trainings are based upon what the needs are for the following school year. For example, the Beginning Level is designed for educators who are looking to start a mariachi program or brush up on their beginning level teaching skills. The Intermediate/Advanced Level is designed for those who have already started a program and are looking for support materials for second- or third-year mariachi programs.
information to share with administrators
There are numerous articles posted about mariachi programs on our website with many more having become available in recent years and accessible via an internet search. Information about the Clark County School District's groundbreaking, standards-based, in-school Mariachi Education Program is also available so that supervisors may see the value of this curriculum. An article published by the Las Vegas Sun that focuses on our workshops and how they are helping teachers meet the needs of so many diverse communities across the country has also been posted. Finally, our website provides access to a peer-reviewed article titled, Mariachi and Spanish speaking English learners: District initiatives, models, and education policy which will be helpful in understanding how mariachi can help ELs adapt to their new surroundings.
